What is it?
Venaseal procedure is a highly successful, minimally invasive, non-thermal procedure that involves placing a biological adhesive (glue) to seal off the veins affected by venous insufficiency. This type of glue has been successfully used by neurosurgeons to seal abnormal blood vessels inside the brain.
How is it done?
Venaseal is an outpatient procedure that takes about 60 min per leg to be performed. Your doctor will make a small incision in the skin to insert a catheter, and through it, he/she will place the medical adhesive inside the affected vein. This particular glue aims to treat the diseased vein and redirect the blood flow to healthy veins. This type of glue has been used for many years by neurosurgeons to treat brain aneurysms.
How soon after the treatment will I see the results?
Immediately after the procedure you’ll feel tender and might develop bruising. It takes about 3 weeks to see the results but your legs will continue to improve for the next 6-12 weeks. In some cases patients can develop a hard lump under the incision site. If that happens, there is no reason to worry, it will go away on its own.
Can i Go to school/work the following day?
Unless your work involves a lot of heavy lifting and strenuous leg workouts, you can go to school/work the following day.
What are the post procedure instructions?
- Walking helps – walk as much as possible (2-3 times a day for 30 min is ideal)
- You don’t have to wear compression stockings at all but some people find them helpful
- Refrain from flying or long car rides for 1 week following the treatment
Is It Painful?
It is virtually painless. You may feel a bit of discomfort at certain moments during the procedure. After the procedure you will feel tender and bruised for a couple of weeks. Some people develop more intense tenderness. Wearing compression stockings is not necessary but may help especially in the first 1-2 weeks. We are happy to take calls and answer questions or see you if you think your healing is not progressing as expected.
Can I do Venaseal in the Summer?
You can have the Venaseal procedure done year-round.
