What is an Intake Appointment?

Our nurse navigator will ask a series of questions to better determine your concerns and level of disease. They will also recommend/order necessary preliminary testing before meeting with a surgeon in consultation. Vein disease can be quite complex in some cases. We ensure a thorough workup prior to making a treatment plan.

What is a mapping ultrasound?

A mapping ultrasound looks at a patient’s specific venous anatomy, the size and location of the vessels to determine which treatment would work best. This is an important tool for the surgeons.

What does Venous insufficiency or reflux mean?

Leg veins have valves preventing blood from flowing backwards down the vein.  When the valves are damaged, or stretched apart, blood will run backwards down the leg and results in varicose veins being formed.

Are Consultations and procedures covered by OHIP?

Consultations are covered by OHIP however, following OHIP guidelines, only stripping is covered by OHIP if the patient’s disease is severe enough to qualify.  Most vein procedures are an out-of-pocket expense.

Yes, during consultations a second person is welcome to attend, however, they are not allowed in during an ultrasound or procedure unless they are needed as an interpreter.

Our nurse navigator will start the process prior to meeting with one of our surgeons.  Three to six months after delivery we can start the workup and plan for treatments.

Taking time off work is not necessary unless you do heavy lifting or extreme activity for your job.  Walking or being on your feet is well tolerated after procedures.  If sitting for long periods for work, we would encourage getting up for a short walk a few times a day. Patients having a microphlebectomy might consider not returning to work for a day or two.
