EVLT
Endovenous Laser Treatment
Benefits of EVLT
Minimally invasive. Highly effective. Fast recovery.
Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) is currently considered the gold standard for treating varicose veins. This advanced, minimally invasive procedure is designed to eliminate varicose veins at their source—without the need for traditional vein stripping surgery.
Most patients are able to return to work and normal activities as early as the next day, making it a convenient and reliable solution for those struggling with chronic venous insufficiency or unsightly, bulging veins.
Why EVLT is Used
Varicose veins are often caused by faulty valves in the great or small saphenous veins, allowing blood to pool and pressure to build. This leads to swelling, discomfort, and the visible twisting and bulging of affected veins. EVLT directly targets these problematic veins, offering long-term relief from symptoms such as leg heaviness, aching, swelling, and fatigue, while also improving the appearance of the legs.
How the Treatment Works
EVLT is performed under local tumescent anesthesia, which numbs the treatment area and provides comfort throughout the procedure. Using ultrasound guidance, a tiny nick is made in the skin, and a thin laser fiber is inserted into the affected vein. Once in position, controlled laser energy is applied to the vein walls. The heat causes the vein to collapse and seal shut—a process known as sclerosis. Over time, the treated vein scars down and blood is naturally rerouted to healthy veins.
What to Expect
Before Treatment
You will receive a comprehensive ultrasound assessment to map your vein anatomy and confirm that EVLT is the appropriate treatment. Your provider will explain the procedure, answer your questions, and provide instructions on how to prepare (such as avoiding certain medications or arranging transportation if needed).
During Treatment
The procedure typically takes just over an hour and is performed in a comfortable outpatient setting. After applying local anesthesia, your provider will insert the laser fiber and activate the laser. You may feel some mild pressure or a warm sensation, but the process is generally well-tolerated.
After Treatment
Following the procedure, you’ll be fitted with a small bandage and medical-grade compression stockings, which should be worn as directed to promote healing and reduce swelling. Most patients are encouraged to walk immediately and can resume work and regular activities the next day. Minor bruising or tenderness may occur, but these symptoms usually resolve within a few days.
EVLT offers a safe, effective, and efficient way to treat varicose veins with minimal downtime. If you’re ready to take the first step toward healthier, more comfortable legs, schedule a consultation today.
