Microphlebectomy
Benefits of Microphlebectomy
Precise. Minimally invasive. Excellent cosmetic results.
Microphlebectomy is a minor surgical procedure used to remove visible varicose veins through tiny skin incisions. It is typically recommended for patients whose veins are close to the surface of the skin.
This technique is ideal for improving both the function and appearance of the legs, especially in cases where veins are too large for sclerotherapy but not appropriate for endovenous laser treatment.
Why Microphlebectomy is Used
Varicose veins can cause discomfort, swelling, aching, and cosmetic concerns. While deeper or larger veins often require internal treatment, some prominent veins just under the skin can be safely and effectively removed with microphlebectomy. This procedure is especially beneficial when ultrasound shows that the deeper saphenous veins are functioning normally and reflux is not a factor.
How the Treatment Works
Microphlebectomy is performed under local tumescent anesthesia, which numbs the treatment area and causes the target vein to collapse slightly, making it easier to remove through very small incisions. Using specialized tools, the surgeon carefully extracts the vein segment by segment through these micro-incisions—often less than 2-3 mm in length. Because the incisions are so small, no stitches are typically required, and scarring is minimal.
What to Expect
Before Treatment
A thorough consultation and ultrasound examination will determine whether microphlebectomy is the right approach for your varicose veins. You’ll be given clear instructions for preparation, including any medication adjustments and guidance on compression wear.
During Treatment
The procedure is usually completed in under an hour in our clinic. After applying a generous amount of tumescent anesthesia to numb the area and compress the veins, your provider will make small incisions and gently remove the problematic vein.
After Treatment
You’ll go home the same day wearing a compression wrap to help support healing and reduce swelling or bruising. Some mild discomfort, bruising, or tightness may be experienced for a few days, but downtime is minimal. A compression stocking is sent home with you and should replace the wrap the day after the procedure. Walking is encouraged immediately, and many patients return to normal activities within a week.
