Varicose Vein Treatments
Mapping
At Stratford Vein Clinic, we use a non-invasive procedure called venous mapping to assess the structure and function of your leg veins. Performed using advanced duplex ultrasound technology, this process allows Nicole, our trained technician, to create a detailed map of your venous anatomy, identifying healthy veins, areas of reflux (where blood flows backward), and any blockages or abnormalities. This essential diagnostic step provides our surgeons with the critical information needed to determine the most appropriate and effective treatment plan for your specific condition.
Endovenous Laser Treatment
Currently considered the gold standard of treatment for varicose veins. Recovery time is minimal and patient can return to work the next day. Performed under local tumescent anesthesia, a laser is inserted through a tiny nick in the skin and is guided in place with ultrasound. The heat from the laser damages the vessel from the inside, and will sclerose (harden and close off) over time. Patients leave with a small bandage and wearing post-procedure compression stockings.
Microphlebectomy
Microphlebectomy is a surgical technique that is used to remove segments of visible varicose veins. This procedure is typically used in situations when significant reflux disease is not present. A large volume of tumescent anesthesia helps compress the vessel, so only tiny incisions are made with minimal bleeding for best cosmetic results.
Ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy
UGFS or echosclerotherapy is used on vessels that cannot be treated with EVLT. The vessel is damaged using a chemical rather than heat. A small needle is inserted into the vessel and the foam is injected into the varicose vein, damaging the walls and causing it to sclerose (harden and close off) overtime. Patients can return to most normal activities the same day. A compression stocking is worn for a minimal time post procedure to help keep treated vessels closed.
VEIN STRIPPING
Until the development of more advanced, minimally invasive techniques, high ligation and vein stripping were the standard treatments for addressing disease in the main veins of the superficial venous system. This surgical approach involves tying off the affected vein near the groin and removing the problematic vein segment through small incisions along the leg. While effective in many cases, vein stripping typically requires general or regional anesthesia and may involve a longer recovery period compared to newer treatments. Some patients may experience temporary discomfort, bruising, or scarring. Although it has a higher likelihood of recurrence than modern procedures such as EVLT or sclerotherapy, vein stripping remains a viable option for select cases where less invasive methods are not appropriate.
Stratford Vein Clinic serves patients from across Southwestern Ontario. Our team of medical professionals provide varicose vein treatments including EVLT, Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy, Microphlebectomy, and Vein Stripping.
