UGFS
Ultrasound Guided Foam Sclerotherapy
Targeted. Non-surgical. Rapid recovery.
Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy (UGFS), also known as echosclerotherapy, is a safe and effective non-surgical treatment for varicose veins that are not suitable for Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT).
UGFS is ideal for veins that are tortuous (twisted), deeper beneath the skin, or located in areas where thermal treatments are not feasible. It uses a specialized foam solution to chemically close the vein, offering a gentle and highly targeted alternative to heat-based procedures.
Why UGFS is Used
Ultrasound Guided Foam Sclerotherapy is often recommended for patients with varicose veins that are too small, twisted, or superficial for laser treatment. These veins may still cause symptoms such as heaviness, aching, or swelling and can impact both comfort and appearance. UGFS can also be used to treat residual veins after EVLT or microphlebectomy, making it a versatile tool in comprehensive vein care.
How the Treatment Works
The procedure is guided by real-time ultrasound imaging, which allows the clinician to precisely locate the vein and monitor the treatment as it happens. A small needle is used to access the vein, and a medical-grade foam sclerosant is injected directly into the vessel. The foam displaces the blood in the vein and chemically irritates the vein walls, causing them to collapse and eventually harden (sclerose). Over time, the treated vein scars down and blood flow is redirected to healthier veins.
What to Expect
Before Treatment
A thorough ultrasound assessment will be performed to map your veins and determine if UGFS is the most appropriate option. You’ll receive instructions to prepare for the procedure, which may include avoiding certain medications and arranging compression stockings for post-treatment care.
During Treatment
UGFS is a quick, in-office procedure that typically takes 30 minutes or less. After cleansing the area, a fine needle is inserted into the targeted vein and the foam is injected under ultrasound guidance. Most patients experience only mild discomfort, such as a tingling or pressure sensation.
After Treatment
You will be fitted with a compression stocking, which should be worn for a period of time as directed, depending on the size of your vessel. Compression helps keep the vein walls closed and redirects blood flow and helps with inflammation. Strenuous activities should be avoided for a week, but walking is encouraged during the healing proc
Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy is a highly effective, minimally invasive solution for varicose veins that require a more customized approach. If you’re looking for relief from uncomfortable or unsightly veins, contact our clinic to learn if UGFS is right for you.
